Fairy tales are fiction

My mother always had me believe in fairy tales. She loves the drama of it all - a knight coming in to rescue the fair maiden from the evils of the world. In reality, that's not going to happen. People, generally speaking, are selfish fuckers. Self-serving and inner focused they will only do what is right for them, what gets them ahead in life. They don't give a shit about you and your pissy problems.

Life is a cunt. I wish it were otherwise but it is not.

Life is a challenge. Every fucking day is hard work in one way or another. There's always a hurdle to overcome, an obstacle to go around. Making a living is difficult; buying into the housing market is a nightmare; children are a worry and relationships are complicated. Modern food is full of (tasty) shit that should not enter our bodies. We are drinking contaminated water and breathing polluted air. We undervalue nature, exercise and health in general. Diseases are rife. And not the pure versions - not your a grade heroine type - these are self-imposed illnesses such as diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol and cancer. We battle traffic every day to go to jobs we hate to pay for things we don't need in order to fit into a society that does not function in the best interest of it's participants. All in all, there is a lot against you.

Faith is hard to maintain. Then you find someone. A diamond among the rough (to steal from Aladdin) and they promise you the world. You fall into the fairy tale trap; thinking maybe there's hope yet. But disappointment prevails and you realise that the gripe you have is really with yourself.

Believing in fairy tales is not something to encourage in children. And it is definitely not appropriate for adults.
